Basic Electronic Equipment
You’ll need some basic electronic tools: a scale for precise measurements, a stick blender to mix everything smoothly, and a laser thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature of your oils and lye mixture.

PPE- Personal Protective Equipment
Make sure to protect yourself with PPE (personal protective equipment). An apron shields your clothes from spills, while eye protection guards against splashes. Gloves keep your hands safe from any harsh chemicals. Also, don’t forget to wear long sleeves to protect your arms from any spills.

Mixing Supplies
For soapmaking, having the right mixing utensils is key. You’ll want mixing bowls for blending ingredients, funnel pitchers for pouring, silicone spatulas and spoons for stirring and scraping, and stainless steel spoons for mixing solutions, disposable cups for measuring lye, or mixing additives. Additionally, a stainless steel pot or microwave-safe bowl is handy for melting oils.

Soap Mold
When you begin to make soap, you’ll need a mold. You can make a mold out of a box and parchment paper, or even a Pringles can. But I prefer wooden molds with silicone inserts. There are many varieties depending on budget as well as your need.

Soap Cutter
A soap cutter is another essential item to add to your soapmaking shopping list. Having a good soap cutter will ensure your bars of soap are even and professional. When it comes to soap cutters, there is a vast array of prices. When you’re getting started, you can start with something as simple as a cheese cutter.

Miscellaneous Must-Haves
Clean-up is an unfortunate, but essential part of soapmaking. Add these must-have items to your soapmaking supplies as well! Make sure to have vinegar on hand and spray bottle to neutralize any remaining lye and towels handy.

As highlighted in the Soapmaking Shopping List for Beginners, this list is tailored for those just starting out. As your skills grow, you can expand your supplies accordingly. Ready to start soaping? Learn how, with my tried and true cold process soap recipe here.
